Midi Madness is a software programme designed to work either as a stand alone soft synth or as a vst plug in. It is most easily described as being an Algorithmic Melody Generator. Currently Midi Madness is only available in PC format although we are working hard to add MAC compatibility in the future.
MIDI Madness creates melodic fragments based on controlled chance, with you in full control of the parameters – which notes, length, velocity, etc., with additional controls over Pitch Bend and Continuous Controllers (MIDI CC). The created fragments can be played by most major media players, or dragged into a sequencing package to trigger soft synths
Uses for the melodic fragments are endless – a bass line, a riff, an accompaniment; it can be simple, it can be mad, it can be whatever you define it to be.

How Midi Madness Works
MIDI Madness generates its notes and events based on selected probabilities (or probability weightings). You, the user, select the likelihood for something to happen, then MIDI Madness makes decisions based upon your choices.
Every aspect of the melody generation is available to be controlled – the notes, the duration of the notes, their loudness, how accurate to a metronome… MIDI CC and pitch bend parameters can also be set to control the final sound player.
When generating each note, MIDI Madness inspects the settings and generates the notes depending on the boundaries you have put in place.
The probabilities are set using the modules accessible from the main console.
How Midi Madness is used
When all the probability weightings have been set, generating the fragments is simplicity itself.
The centre of operations for MIDI Madness is the console, and the biggest button is where the action is. The ‘Go’ button takes the probability weightings you have chosen, and uses them to build a melodic fragment that you can use. The generated melody is shown in the display panel above the button. The last 10 generated melodies are stored and available for recall.
OK, you may be after short repeated phrase to sit in a piece of music, and all your ideas aren’t quite working…
The particular section you have in mind uses only the chord of E major. To let MIDI Madness know this, you would indicate that the notes E, G#, and B should be available to be chosen. This is done using one of the available modules (in this case ‘Notes’)
As you can see, of all the notes available there, only E, G# and B have bars against them. This would mean that MIDI madness will only choose one of those notes when looking for a note. Notice that each of the notes has a different height bar, this indicates the relative probability of the notes being selected. The ‘E’ has the highest bar, and so is more likely to be selected than the B or the G#. If you looked at what MIDI madness generated for such a collection, you would expect to find more ‘E’s, followed by ‘B’s, and the least occurring not would be the G#.
Once you have the notes you want to use, you then need to make a decision as to which octave these notes are going to sound in. A different type of probability selector is used to do this.
This looks like a standard distribution curve from a maths text book. Thankfully, you don’t need to know about maths, or how MIDI madness deals with such things – you only need to know what you want to hear! For instance, if you want a bass line, make the curve cover only the left-hand of the window; for an ambient pad, you may choose something limited to just one or two of the higher octaves.
Set some information about phrasing:
Hitting ‘Go’ will generate a fragment that you can audition, if it didn’t work for you, try another… alter some settings, do it again… It can get very addictive!
